It can be quite nerve wracking when Emergency Services (Police, Ambulance, Fire Engine) are behind you en route to an emergency. Follow these tips to help both you, and the Emergency Services.
- If you’re already moving when they’re behind you, let them pass you as soon as they SAFELY can. Remember, you need to decide what’s best. It might be an idea for you to pull over, or you might need to keep going till there’s more space and then let them pass. Every situation is different, so really think about what would be the best option.
- If you’re waiting at a red traffic light and the emergency services come up behind you en route to an emergency, don’t cross the stop line at the lights to let them through. It seems odd, but you might cause other problems if you do (and sometimes you can even get a fine)!
If they can get around you safely, they will do – they are the experts. If they can’t get round you they’ll wait behind you with their blue lights still flashing, but they’ll turn their siren off. Then when the lights go green and you can move again, they’ll turn their siren back on and get past you quickly but safely. As always, never rush any decisions, and be safe!
