Everything we do while we’re driving relates to using the Hazard Routine! It looks a lot at first, but soon you won’t even realise you’re using it, as it’s just a system for us to use to stay safe and make decent decisions all the time while we’re driving.
It relates to ALL situations, but let’s use it in this example for turning right in to a side street. (I’m not going to go into specific detail here, you can do that on your lessons. It’s just a way to understand the basic principle behind the Hazard Routine).
- MIRRORS – check them early! You might see someone overtaking you, and decide not to turn right atall. Quick regular checks of your mirrors will always help you make good decisions.
- SIGNAL – when the time is right. Look around you and really think about when to put your signal on, it’s up to you to decide when’s best!
- POSITION – wherever you position your car is always a HUGE clue to people as to what you want to do next, so really put some thought in to where you want to position your car, based on what’s going on around you. (Again, discuss this on your lessons, or get in touch with me if you’re not sure).
- SPEED – whatever situation you’re coming up to, make sure you’re COMFORTABLE with your speed. Slow enough to be able to scan all round you and react to possible hazards gently, but not so slow that you’re holding people up when you don’t need to hold them up.
- LOOK – be sure to have a final look around before you commit to what you’re planning on doing next.
Like I said earlier, get into the habit of letting this system help you make decisions while you’re on the move, and soon you won’t even know you’re using it because your driving will be so hassle free and enjoyable!
