The reason that we can do both these things is to warn other people that we’re there (for example if someone is accidentally steering towards us). It’s not so we can let people go through, or have a go at them if we’re wound up with something they’ve done. Loads of people do those things, but here’s some reasons not to;
- If you flash your lights or sound your horn, very often the wrong people think you’re doing it at them, causing confusion and sometimes road rage!
- If you flash your lights to let someone out, and they then crash, they might try blaming you for causing confusion.
- People sometimes flash their lights to let people out, then deliberately crash in to that person. It’s all part of insurance fraud!
It’s nice to let people out when it’s appropriate, so the best thing to do is give them plenty of room. That way they’ll have plenty of time to check all around them before moving off. Also you’ll avoid getting caught up in any dodgy insurance scam.
Safe driving folks!
