Very often the road ahead of you will be narrow for various reasons (parked cars, width restrictions etc.) so look up the highway code rules for who gets priority if someone is coming towards you, and you can’t both fit through the gap.
However, follow these tips to make meeting situations easy to manage and stress free!
- As soon as you can see the road ahead is narrow, check your mirrors and really KNOW what’s happening behind you.
- If someone then comes towards you and you’re not sure you can both pass through, slow down or even gently stop if you need to.
- Initially, stay away from the kerb and well back from the hazard on your side. You’ll be able to see further ahead, plus people will know that you’re dealing with a meeting situation.
- In some cases you’ll need to then move to the left to let the oncoming traffic through. Check your left mirror to make sure it’s safe to move over.
- Only then go through the gap when you’re absolutely sure you can fit through.
(Very often you’ll find that by holding well back from your hazard, but staying visible to the oncoming traffic, the oncoming traffic will be happy to let you through anyway. Everyone’s a winner!)
