You’ll need to master Normal Stops as early as you can because you’ll be doing it a lot in your driving future. Understandably, people worry about hitting the kerb, but follow these steps and you’ll be absolutely fine!
- Check your interior and left mirrors to see if it’s safe to even think about pulling in.
- When it’s safe and you know exactly where you want to end up, think about when’s best to signal** and start drifting towards the kerb. This shouldn’t involve much steering.
- Slow down to a jogging pace when you’re near the kerb and look well forward (ideally at a parked car so you can line up with it – if there isn’t one, just imagine one and line up with that. Trust me, it really works!)
- Slow down to a walking pace and if you need to fine tune your positioning it’ll be easy to do now.
- When you’ve stopped, secure your car and you’re all done!
(** If there’s no people around, you don’t always need to signal to pull in or move off, but if you’re not sure that there’s any people around, for example in parked cars, it’s best to put a signal on.)
