Very often at traffic lights you’ll find some Advanced Stop Lines (some people call them bike boxes), and the only people who are supposed to wait in these are cyclists, not even motorcyclists are supposed to wait in them!
On your driving test, if you wait in one of these you will fail your test, UNLESS you end up in one of them through no fault of your own. (Let’s say you had to brake a little suddenly to avoid going through an amber light, and you accidentally ended up in that area, that should be ok!)
Some of the reasons that we try to allow cyclists to get to the front of the traffic light queue are;
- They can be seen by more motorists.
- They have more room to their right, so hopefully they don’t have people’s door mirrors catching them when they move off.
- By not being behind vehicles, they are not inhaling as many fumes from vehicles’ exhausts!
Keep your eyes peeled for them, and see how many motorists actually DO stay out of them! Safe driving folks.
